Princes William and Harry have revealed their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, was “the naughtiest of parents” who “smothered us in love”.
In a televised documentary timed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death in a Paris car crash, the princes speak openly together about their mother for the first time.
A trailer of Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy shows both sons being filmed flicking through a family photo album that their mother had put together.
“Believe it or not, you and I are both in this photograph. You’re in the tummy,” says Prince William, looking at a cherished photograph of Diana holding him while she was expecting Harry.
Harry himself adds: “This is the first time that the two of us have ever spoken about her [publicly] as a mother.”
In the trailer, Prince William describes his mother as “very informal,” adding she “really enjoyed the laughter and the fun”. Prince Harry says: “She was our mum. She still is our mum. And of course, as a son I would say this – she was the best mum in the world. She smothered us with love, that’s for sure.”
Harry refers to Diana being the “naughtiest of parents” because of her desire to break from the rigours of Royal protocol and lead a life of her own outside of palace walls.
ITV will air the program later in July. Producers Oxford Film and Television say it will explore how Diana shaped her sons’ lives, and will “offer their perspective on the Princess’ unique contribution to public life, including her charitable and humanitarian work”.
Executive producer Nick Kent explained: “The film will show Princess Diana in a way she has never been seen before, through the eyes of the two people who knew her best.”
